Collaborative Learning Can Enhance The Classroom Experience

The Internet has certainly changed the face of education and learning. Whether you are looking for formal learning processes, or just an informational class it can all be found on the Internet.

The Internet is increasingly changing the way students learn and the educational process in general. In today’s educational arena we can obtain online education degrees, share information with people around the world and generally share ideas almost instantly.

This online collaborative learning field has expanded student’s horizons enormously and provides a sense of global community. You may be wondering how this all works.

Collaborative learning is based on the use of group projects. Even though students may be scattered across various geographic locations, this type of online learning allows them to share information and ideas, thus expanding the group’s experience as a whole. Students in these types of environments often use document management and sharing tools such as Google Docs as a basis for sharing and collaboration.

Online discussion, chat and forums are important to the overall collaborative efforts. Students and instructors can communicate easily with others within the group. This informal method of communication can build the community spirit of the process.

In addition, other real-time forms of communication are important. Skype and other such teleconferencing and videoconferencing tools can help bring the group together in a more active environment. These applications can also be used to bring a more formal teacher-student lecture atmosphere to the online classroom.

If you are a teacher, you may want to include this type of global collaborative environment to your classroom for an enhanced learning experience. If you are a student, look for this option to enhance your experience as well.

If you are interested in learning how to be a teacher, then you should be excited to know you have a bit of a journey to walk along first, which is obtaining your own education. In order to be qualified to teach students, you must have your own college degree.

Learning to Teach

This makes perfect sense though, because it is your college education that will be the basis for your students’ foundational knowledge of a subject, and so you must be well versed in the subject in order to teach it. Whether you decide to obtain an online college degree or a traditional on campus degree, your college degree is going to play an integral role in preparing you to be a teacher.

There are a lot of different types of teachers that you can reasonably become. For example, you can become a general education teacher and can fill a role in a primary or secondary school, or you can become a college professor where you teach a specific subject that you are passionate about.

Another option that is available to you is to become a special education teacher or to fill another specialized teaching role. There are always needs for these types of teachers and they can provide you with a truly rewarding experience as well. There are definitely a number of options to consider, but first, consider starting on your education goals so that you can become the teacher that you want to be.

Teaching Methods with Students Who Have Learning Disabilities

Teachers often face tough challenges when it comes to teaching students with learning disabilities. They require individualized instruction that helps them to overcome learning obstacles and be successful in school.

The first step teachers can take is to get the necessary training to work with these students. There are many online education degrees that can help them to master different techniques and strategies for working with learning disabilities. These courses can be taken as part of professional development hours. The special education teacher in the school can also be an excellent source of information on how to work with these students.

Teachers need to be open to different ways of helping students learn. Many students with learning disabilities are visual, tactile and auditory learners. This means using a variety of strategies to present a new concept, allowing the students to use the learning style that works best for them. Accommodations as outlined in the child’s Individualized Educational Plan are also important, including preferred seating, extended time on tests and having material read to them. When these are used consistently, the child’s chances of success rise.

The different types of learning disabilities in reading and math require that a teacher have a diverse knowledge base, be open to new ideas and be able to adapt. These skills make it easier to find solutions to academic struggles and reduces the stress on the child. When these elements are present in the classroom, learning disabilities can be overcome and a student can find academic success.

The Future Is Today with Online Learning

Learning environments are rapidly changing with the Internet and the technology that supports it. Everything from collaborative learning, mLearning, student bulletin boards, and distance learning are changing the way people receive their education.

Is Online Learning Better?

Some are skeptical about taking the classroom to the Internet, but an accredited online learning program can be just as effective, if not more so, than the traditional brick and mortar scenario. Online college courses are rapidly gaining in popularity. They give more people to opportunity to receive the education they want. For working adults, it’s an ideal setting. For teachers and students, it opens up new and exciting teaching methods and learning environments.

The key to a quality education via the Internet is to make sure that the program you enroll yourself or your child in is accredited. The major accreditation entities for online colleges are the regional accreditation boards. Accreditation is voluntary, but students should avoid any school that does not seek accreditation. Look for the regional organization for where your school of choice is located. If the school is not listed, think about choosing a different learning institution.

mLearning and Social Learning

Via mobile devices such as smart phones, many students and teachers are finding new ways to learn.  Social learning, via social networking gives collaborative learning a whole new avenue. No single learning environment is right for everyone, so via the Internet, social networking, smart phones and even the old-fashioned classroom, students have many choices for finding the best place to get an education.

The Benefits of a College Education

If you have career goals, or want to do something with your life in the future, then you should be aware of the fact that there are a myriad of benefits associated with obtaining a college education. It should not be difficult to figure out what a college education can do for you.

The Benefits of a College Education

One of the greatest benefits of a college education is a fairly straight forward one to understand. College is going to prepare you for the world as well as your career. Not only are you going to learn how to do what you need to do for your career, but you are also going to learn a variety of essential life skills that you can apply to all aspects of your life.

Another great benefit of college education is that it is highly flexible to meet a wide variety of different needs. Just as a basic example, an average college is going to offer both traditional on campus courses as well as online courses, and both can be essential in helping you get the degree or the education that you are looking for.

Hopefully as you consider the myriad of benefits associated with your education, you realize that there are more reasons to get an education than not to. If you have career goals or hope to have more than just an ordinary job in the future, then preparing for your life with a serious college education is going to be essential.

Improving Your Teaching Methods

Every teacher has a different method of teaching. Depending on the subject you teach, the age of students, and the area you teach in, your teaching methods can vary. As a recent graduate, or a new teacher in the area, you may not know what teaching methods work properly for you and your students. Here are a few tips to help you out.

Gather Ideas

There are plenty of places you can get ideas from to help you improve your teaching skills. You may have an idea from personal experience, but you can gather information from online resources, colleagues, and magazine articles. You can also take online college courses to help you understand different teaching methods. Look for activities you can do and habits you should get into to keep your students focused, continually learning, and keep everyone in their comfort zone.

Experiment

Put these ideas into action. Some may be less effective than others, but you may find that some advice you have received really helps. Try not to use too many ideas at once so that you can easily compare which techniques work the best.

Evaluate

After experimenting, determine whether or not that method was successful. You can evaluate by your own observations, or ask students what they did or didn’t like about your teaching methods. If it was successful, you may consider sticking with it, but if it wasn’t you should move onto another technique. Finding and mastering an effective method can take several years, so don’t be discouraged if you don’t master it right away.

Culinary Curriculum for Family & Consumer Science

Whether you’re teaching a cooking class in a public school, private school, or home-schooled environment, it can be easy to fall into boring patterns. Letting your students eat in class is fun enough, right? Wrong! There are plenty of ways for you to make the most of your students’ culinary lessons.

If you’re trying to work a cooking curriculum into your home school environment and you don’t know where to start, try looking into online college courses in FACS education– or even a basic culinary skills class.

Here are some basics to get you started.

Make the Basics Fun

Obviously, you need to teach safety before you can teach cooking. Your kids don’t care about safety! They want to get their hands dirty in the kitchen. Reign them in a little by teaching a small lesson and following up with a basic project. For example, teach them safe knife skills and then have them chop up fruit for a no-cook fruit salad. Play review games about safety tips.

Stop Teaching Recipes

Don’t teach your kids to blindly follow recipes. Have them get creative in the kitchen! For example, when teaching your egg unit, ask your students to dream up their own omelette combinations. Bacon and cheese are great, sure, but what about a pizza omelette? What about a stir-fry omelette? See if they can turn their favorite meal into an omelette. Once they’ve crafted their own recipe, have them try it out in the kitchen. What worked? What didn’t?

Switching Careers to Work in Education

If you feel you’re stuck in your career, it’s only because you have realized the possibilities that exist. Sometimes when we get our bachelor’s degree, we don’t really know what we want to do with our lives. We may have chosen the degree because it was a short program or because it was easy — not because we loved it or enjoyed it. Now, years later, you find yourself ready for something different.

By looking into online education degrees, you may realize that you can switch careers. No matter what you got your bachelor’s degree in, there are master’s programs that allow you to not only earn your master’s degree in education but your teaching certification as well allowing you teach. Having a master’s degree puts you at an advantage in terms of pay as well, since having a master’s degree gives you an automatic raise.

By earning a degree online, you can continue working your regular job while you’re in the program. Realize, however, that these programs require fieldwork, which includes being in the classroom for a certain number of hours during the semester or year. Make sure your work is willing to work with you in allowing you that time off since this fieldwork is critical for your success in the program. If you love teaching, though, then finishing the online program will be worth it, no matter what frustrations you face. Just remember the big picture and stick with it. A career in teaching can be very rewarding.

It can be hard to finish school when you don’t have the time or you simply don’t have the capacity to work at the same pace as the majority of people. Learning disabilities and being able to manage your time can both affect your ability to finish your schooling. Online courses can help in these types of situations and allow you to complete your education requirements on your own time and schedule.

High School

If you have a learning disability or are more advanced, online high school courses can help you graduate at your own pace. Sometimes, you can graduate early, and, if you need to, some online schools allow you to graduate a year or two late. With homeschooling, you don’t usually spend eight hours a day working like you do in a public school, but spend an average of about four hours a day doing your school work. This gives you extra free time and allows you to work around your schedule.

College Courses

Obtaining an online college degree isn’t any more difficult than going to a community college or university, but they come with many other advantages that may fit your lifestyle better. With online college classes you can take as light of a load as you want, take your time, save money on commuting to school, and work while you travel. This is a great idea for someone who is having a tough time going back to school because of a tight schedule. You can also work toward finishing online certification programs, such as a nursing assistant, rather than getting a degree.

Teaching Students with Dyslexia

Teachers deal with all types of students. Being  fully prepared is important incase you get students that have a learning disability such as dyslexia.

When working with children with dyslexia, be extremely flexible. It’s best to work closely with the student and the parents to help them get through the school year. Every student deserves a great education whether on-campus or through online courses.

Get Help

Let the students have as much help as they need. Work with both the student and the parents and offer other options for them. The amount of work needed will depend on the level of dyslexia. You could offer a tutor, special accommodations or get an aid for the student.

Make Accommodations

Students with dyslexia will need more take to take tests or to work on assignments. Make sure the student is not given a time limit to do these things because it will cause them to get frustrated and it will affect their grades and self-esteem.

Use different ways of giving out instructions. Take visual, kinesthetic and auditory learning and combine them together. This could help with students that have different learning styles. Remember, not all students learn the same way.

Keep Parents Informed

Always keep parents up to date with how their children are doing. If students are improving let the parents know. If they’re pushing back then talk to them about what they can do to get their child back on track and succeeding in school because it can and will happen.
