Young Adults are Ill Prepared for College

Going off to college should be an exciting and fun experience for young adults. However, many are discovering their high school education was lacking. Many young adults struggle in their first year of college. Many of these students were honor roll students and are crushed when they realize the college courses are far more advanced than the curriculum in high school. Many college professors from around the country have indicated they are seeing more and more students that do not have the necessary education to be successful in college. Sometime it push them into continue studies through online college degrees.

While many were excellent students in high school, the curriculum provided was not sufficient. The education system is failing many students and many standardized tests used to measure educational standards only test for minimal skills. Many students are finding that they are far behind the academic standards at most colleges. Academic and curriculum standards need to be increased in high school to better prepare students for college.

Many colleges have developed intermediate courses to help students learn the necessary information to advance to college courses. These intermediate courses contain the information students should have learned in high school. School boards across the country need to evaluate their curriculum to ensure it meets the standards of what is expected of a student in their first year of college. Many students are so discouraged in their first year and they drop out.

The gap between high school education and college continues to grow. High school education standards are far too low and it is becoming evident as young adults enter the college environment. Many schools utilize assessment testing; however, many of these tests are ineffective and are based on lower academic standards.

It is evident that the educational system is lacking and many schools are beginning to utilize innovative methods of delivering a high quality education and high education standards. This is a move in the right direction.
